What You Never Knew About Coffee

Most people associate their morning cup of coffee with giving them that boost they need to face the day, particularly on Monday to Friday when they have to head to the office. However, there are just so many fascinating things that you may not know about this delicious beverage.

For example, were you aware that not only is coffee delicious, it may also be good for your health? There have been many studies conducted into the health benefits of coffee, with many results indicating that it could be good for the liver and may reduce the risk of heart attacks and certain cancers. In addition to this one, there may be many more facts that you simply did not know about coffee:

1. Coffee can help you to burn fat, with studies showing that it can help to increase metabolism by up to 11%.

2. Coffee is full of antioxidants that are said to prevent premature ageing and can contribute to protecting your skin against the damaging effects of the sun’s UV rays.

3. Drinking a cup of coffee at the very early stage of a headache could help to prevent it from developing into a migraine.

4. Around 1.6 billion cups of coffee are consumed around the world every single day!

5. Elephants regularly eat the coffee fruit that contains the coffee beans. This means that the beans can be found ready hulled in the elephant dung (and some varieties of coffee actually use these beans)!

6. Coffee is a great drink for those on a diet – provided you have it black. One cup of coffee has around two calories. However, once you start adding milk, sugar and flavourings, those calories start to creep up very quickly.

7. If you need a quick boost, a cup of coffee is the ideal option as it takes just ten minutes to start feeling the effects of the caffeine.

Is Your Morning Coffee About to Become More Affordable?

Those who love their morning coffee before work could be spending a small fortune on their favourite brew. With the average cup of coffee costing £2.45, this could mount up to more than £600 annually for those who buy a cup Monday to Friday. However, big coffee chains are about to get a shock with easyCoffee about to roll out another 200 of their £1 coffee shops.

The company, which was founded by EasyJet owner Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou in early 2016, currently has two shops – one in Essex and one in London. The budget coffee shop is now planning a massive expansion to compete with the likes of Costa and Starbucks.

Franchise Agreements

Over the next six months, there are set to be another twelve easyCoffee shops opening up around the country including in High Wycombe, Wembley, and Croydon. However, until franchise agreements have been signed off, the locations of the rest of the 200 shops will not be confirmed. It is expected the chain will begin appearing on high streets around the UK.

Gap in the Market

According to Nathan Lowry who has licenced the ‘easy’ brand from Sir Stelios, “The gap in the market is in pricing. The coffee is great. We use the same machines that all the big guys use; all our staff are highly trained up to barista level. We genuinely feel that people are paying too much for their coffee in the UK.

Nick Patterson-Jones, branding director for easyCoffee, said that the £1 price for a cup of coffee would provide ‘value for money’ for customers.

Delicious Coffee

Away from the high street ‘coffee wars’, if you are looking for delicious coffee at an affordable price, look no further than Good Cup Coffee Company. We sell a range of delicious, aromatic blends at wholesale prices that you and your customers will love.

How Coffee Beans are Harvested

When drinking your favourite coffee each morning, do you ever wonder how it is made? You probably know that it comes from coffee beans and that there are many different varieties to choose from, but do you know what the process of harvesting coffee entails?

Harvesting Methods

Coffee beans are harvested during the dry season every year, and there are a couple of methods for doing this. When coffee cherries are bright red and glossy, it means that they are ripe for picking, but not all beans ripen at the same time.

In order to avoid picking unripe coffee fruit, it is preferable to harvest by hand. Although this method is time-consuming, it does prevent waste as the harvesters will spend all day picking only ripe fruit and leaving the unripe fruit on the tree until it is ready to be picked.

The alternative method is known as strip harvesting; this process involves a machine removing all fruit from the tree whether it is ripe or not.

Best Harvesting Method

As with everything, there are pros and cons to each method of coffee harvesting. With selective harvesting, there is a greater yield of ripe fruit, which means that the coffee producer can demand higher prices. There is also a greater scope for planting trees on sloped surfaces because the fruit is picked by hand. However, the process of picking the fruit can be slow, and it requires a labour force willing to work for low pay. Strip harvesting is much quicker, but extra work is needed after stripping to separate fruit.

So next time you are sipping on your favourite brew, spare a thought for the coffee harvesters who are hard at work stripping coffee fruit from trees so that you can enjoy your delicious blend of aromatic coffee.
